The Young Professionals of Excelsior

We are fortunate to have many YPs involved with Excelsior – from Board members to volunteers, our YP network is stock full of “movers and shakers” who are eager and driven to make a difference in our community. Every day, these Excelsior enthusiasts inspire us with their energy, creativity and passion in supporting their communities.

YPs and Excelsior
Not only are YPs incredible advocates for Excelsior when it comes to spreading awareness of our mission and raising funds to support our programs, but most importantly they are wonderful role models for our youth. So many of our youth have had no real positive role models in their lives. Seeing young, successful, passionate people advocating for them and their future success gives them hope, and more importantly, gives them motivation to dream big and take responsibility for their lives and their futures.

Why Get Involved?
Besides the fact that your involvement with Excelsior could motivate a young person (or many young people) to change the course of their lives, you can also personally benefit from getting involved with Excelsior.

How? Well I’m sure you’ve all heard the cliché “it’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know” –and no matter how tired this phrase has become, it has never been more true for young professionals looking to advance their careers. With hundreds of people moving to Denver every single day, the opportunities to connect with people, whether professionally or personally, are infinite. So whether you’re looking for a new job, new friends or new associates, networking is the way to do it.

FS26You are probably already familiar with the many benefits of networking: shared knowledge, new opportunities, connections, increased self-confidence and speaking skills, increasing your personal profile in the community…and the list goes on.
Still networking can be difficult – it can be awkward and it can even feel disingenuous or forced at times. But you know what makes it easier? Advocating for a charity while networking.

How advocating for a charity can benefit your networking:

  1. It immediately expands your network: Supporting a charity immediately connects you with other supporters of that nonprofit. Plus, getting to know those people is substantially easier because you already have a common interest!
  2. It enhances your credibility: When you advocate for a charity when networking, new contacts learn two things about you – you’re philanthropic and you’re concerned with more than your own self-interests.
  3. Provides a new topic for conversation: Telling someone about a charity you believe in not only gives you something new to talk about, but more importantly it gives you something besides yourself to talk about. Too often networking can feel like a never-ending game of “tooting your own horn”. Talking about your involvement with a charity allows you to give yourself credibility without directly identifying your strengths and accomplishments.
  4. Provides an additional opportunity to connect: It’s very likely (especially in Denver) that you will meet someone who also supports a nonprofit – instant conversation boost! At the very least, you may find that they share similar interests and/or passions as you (in helping youth, for example).
